Do nonsmoking waiters/waitresses have to wait tables in the smoking section?

I’m writing a paper for English about smoking in restaurants and I need to know…I’ve never worked in a restaurant and know nothing about it. I would assume that all waiters have to wait whichever tables they are assigned, but would like to make sure. Thanks!
