How do I remove black smudge marks from a table without removing the varnish?

I put my HDTV on a table and the little black rubber pads from the tv stand left smudge marks on the table. Water doesn’t seem to remove the smudge marks and I don’t want to remove the varnish on the table. Any suggestions? I don’t want my landlady to charge me for the table when I move out this week. Thanks!!!
