How do you refinish end tables?

djnp asked:

My Mom gave me some end tables I would like to refinish, something I have never done before. Any suggestions would be helpful.
They are solid wood.
Oops forgot to add, not painted, they are scuffed and have somewhat of a shiny finish, some of it is dull looking.
